Yvette Cooper's war on online privacy
To my Substack followers:
Delighted to have my first piece published in Spiked — a very proud moment for me. Here’s the synopsis:
The UK could be about to dismantle online privacy for the entire world.
Last month, the government demanded that Apple break its encryption and grant law enforcement access to users’ iCloud data. The demand, made under the Investigatory Powers Act 2016 (dubbed the ‘Snooper’s Charter’), has sparked serious concerns over privacy and free speech.
Simply put, the UK has just fired the starting gun on a global battle. If encryption backdoors become the norm, our ability to communicate securely, without fear of surveillance or reprisa, will be permanently undermined.

I’ll be posting the full, unabridged version — complete with Pooterish technical musings — as a ‘Substack Special’ in the next few days. And if that doesn’t get at least a dozen of you reaching for the unsubscribe button, I don’t know what will.
